He painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs.

It is day 4 of Art Week.  Today, Year 5 have been enjoying in a day-long workshop taken by Artist, Paul Priestley.  Paul says that he aims to build the confidence of the people he teaches as he believes everyone can draw and paint.

Today the workshop was centred around the Artist L S Lowry.  Lowry was famous for painting simplistic images and his famous ‘matchstalk men’.

After listening to Paul’s fascinating talk about Lowry and the methods he used, the girls and boys of Year 5 spent the afternoon putting their newly learned skills to the test and created their own pieces of art.

There is a song on YouTube all about the painter Lowry.  It is by Brian and Michael and the video shows their performance on Top of the Pops in 1978.  Click here to listen.  The song eventually went to No1!
