Science lesson hard to stomach!

It was very noisy in the Science lab this week!  Year 4 have been studying teeth and the digestive system.  The pupils enjoyed a fun practical lesson.  They used a knife and fork to break up the banana and cereal in the mouth (a plate) and added ‘saliva’ to start the digestive process.

The food was then transferred to the stomach (a plastic bag) where stomach acid and enzymes were added (coke) and the food was churned and squeezed to make a very runny substance.

The girls and boys cut a corner from the stomach so that the food could pass into the small intestine (a pair of tights!).  Here, the nutrients were removed and the solid material left behind moved into the large intestine (a plastic cup).  Finally, the waste food left the cup through a hole.

All very messy and great fun!
