Science

The Science Curriculum at Gayhurst aims to enable children to:

  • Be curious, asking scientific questions and challenging ideas
  • Develop their practical skills, using a variety of specialist equipment accurately and confidently
  • Develop strong independence within their learning
  • Develop great confidence within themselves, believing anything can truly be possible
  • Gain a strong understanding of the world around us
  • Develop a love and passion for the subject through exciting and engaging topics, hands-on activities and discussions
  • Have fun!

In the Junior School, science is taught in well-equipped classrooms following an exciting, practical based program of study. When the children move up into the Senior School, they are taught science in our state of the art Science Laboratory.

Years 3 to 6 enjoy two lessons of science a week, which are centered around focus questions, leading to engaging practical activities. During their lessons, pupils have the opportunity to plan and carry out investigations linking to their focus question, make observations, carry out independent research and present their findings in a variety of contexts.

We also have an annual STEAM week, which focuses on the STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). This is an opportunity for all pupils throughout the school to be involved in activities within these subjects. Visiting speakers, parent volunteers, workshops and in-class activities allow for a varied and exciting enrichment week within these fields of study.

Year 6 also have STEAM as a timetabled subject every Friday afternoon. The children are able to undertake a range of projects including robotics, exploring parabolic architecture and designing their own photo frames.
